Well, even though I would like to say that the results of tonight's Tony Awards were a pleasant surprise, it would be a little silly to say that I didn't know beforehand. I was there, of course, and if anyone was watching they were sure to see me in a certain camera shot of the audience. I'm particularly pleased with Patti Lupone for her second win for Best Leading Actress In a Musical, as she brought new life to a character quite near and dear to my heart. Calliope, dear, I'm sorry that Kerry Butler couldn't win for her interesting impersonation of you, but I suppose Lupone was just better. That and the fact that Xanadu is really an awful production all around. Don't worry, it won't be open for long.
In the Heights and Cry-Baby were very close for Best Musical, but the former brought musical theatre to a place its never gone before, and it was quite a refreshing change. As for South Pacific winning Best Revival, well, its a classic, what can you expect? The only thing I have reservations about is Grease getting a nomination for Best Revival, even if it was a pity award. The results of that hideous reality show should really be destroyed. |
